brooklyn based yeasayer describe their music as "middle eastern-psych-snap-gospel." their experimentally based live performances have been known to include backstage projected psychedelic visuals, and according to the band they exist in the future. "somewhere in the middle east, where citizens wear turquoise robes, live in crystal towers, and overindulge on peter gabriel albums." ex-yeasayer drummer luke fasano described their music as collage. "the spirit of collage is what our band's about, so while we're not a laptop band, it's almost like a game to see who can find this other thing that people haven't heard with an amazing sound..." the band currently consists of chris keating (vocals, keyboards), anand wilder (guitar, keyboards) and ira wolf tuton (bass). their first single, "2080" gained the attention of north american hipsters in 2007 and have been compared to grizzly bear, animal collective and tv on the radio. according to npr, yeasayer's debut lp, all hour cymbals builds upon the style set by "2080." "the disc is packed with similar themes: modern man lyrically and musically at odds with primitive spiritualism, filtered through an entrancing wall of layered electronic effects... its dystopian sensibility, international range of sounds, and smart, chic nod to the some of most respected innovators of '80s new wave and post-punk music results in a memorably stirring entry into the budding genre of indie-rock world music." yeasayer provided their song "tightrope" to the hiv/aids awareness raising dark was the night compilation. other wednesday-music.com favorites that took part in that compilation include dirty projectors, bon iver, feist, grizzly bear, the national, my brightest diamond, kronos quartet, the decemberists, iron and wine, arcade fire, spoon, the new pornographers, yo la tengo, andrew bird, conor oberst, kevin drew, and a bunch more. the band released their second lp, odd blood february 09, 2010. according to dummy magazine the band reported that "several mice had been killed during its recording in rural upstate new york, and that the sound was more clear than the previous record." click here for a november 23, 2007 npr second stage performance. click here for a january 14, 2008 world café set recorded by wxpn. click here for a cmj session recorded by kexp. click here to watch yeasayer perform “wait for the summer” st sxsw 2008. click here to watch the band perform in minnesota public radio’s the current studio from october 30, 2008. click here for a few live tracks recorded by the great website daytrotter.com. click here for a few free downloads. don't forget, the album cover image always links to sample songs and the band's image to their website. check here to see if yeasayer have any gigs scheduled near you. as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store by people who know and love music and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand). incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states. that my friend, bites. yeasayer is cosmic. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the beach house profile from last week: here it is.
