with her brother olof dreijer, sweden's karin dreijer andersson formed their
band
the knife in 1999. the electro-pop duo
found early commercial success by lending their music to sony, ugly betty,
csi:
ny, and hbo's entourage. there's a bit of a double standard in that last
sentence because the knife are known for the tendency to not cooperate with the
mainstream. they justified this dichotomy through the need to earn the
funds to start their own record label. karin is so anti-commercial that until 2006, she didn't perform live or make public appearances, in fact, most of her older promotional materials featured her and olof in bird-beaked masks. this aversion to publicity hasn't dimmed their star in the least as they were awarded "2006 album of the year" by pitchfork for their lp, silent shout, and have won seven grammis (swedish grammy award). however, in their classic style, they boycotted the ceremonies in protest of male dominance in the music industry. in 2009, they were commissioned to write the music for an opera based on charles darwin's book "on the origin of the species". according to pitchfork, karin's "vocal style is notable for both shrill and deep, distorted tones combined with her distinctive accent and the use of pitch-shifting..." she sites sonic youth, kate bush, le tigre, siouxsie and the banshees and phil collins (ala miami vice) as influences, and on 18 march 2009, under the name fever ray, she released her self-titled debut lp. she describes the album as stark, somber, intense and anxious, yet luminous. she recently had a child, no doubt influencing the lyrics and engineering of the album. “half of what the songs are about is the subconscious,” karin said. “a lot of it is like daydreaming, dreaming when you’re awake, but tired; a lot of stories come from that world. i try to write when i‘m in that state". click here to watch fever ray's videos in hi-def. click here for a 29 march 2007 npr all things considered story on the knife. click here to watch a few the knife videos. don't forget, the album cover image always links to sample songs and the band's image to their website. check here to see if fever ray have any gigs scheduled near you. as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store by people who know and love music and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand). incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states. that my friend, bites. fever ray is electronically atmospheric. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the yeah yeah yeahs profile from last week: here it is.
