two time mercury prize nominee natasha kahn goes by the "nom de song" bat for lashes. previously, she studied music and visual arts at the university of brighton and taught at a nursery school. it was during this period that she began working on material for her first album. "whenever i’m writing music it’s a very visual place in my mind," said natasha. "it has a location full of characters and colors and landscapes, so those two things really complement each other, and they help the other one to blossom and support the other. they are like brother and sister". bat for lashes' music has been compared to siouxsie sioux, björk, kate bush, pj harvey, annie lennox, tori amos and fiona apple and her sound is a combination of harps, pianos and electronic synthesizer. bat for lashes released her second album, two suns on april 07, 2009. to gain inspiration to write the concept album, natasha traveled to joshua tree national park. the album talks about her desert born alter ego pearl, a personality she created while in new york in order to gain a better understanding of the character. "i really just did it as an experiment of dressing up myself with quite garish extreme feminine make-up," she said. "i wanted to photograph myself in that situation and just see what it made me feel". click here to listen to a june 21, 2009 weekend edition interview recorded by npr. click here to listen to a march 09, 2009 story by npr's morning edition. click here and here for june 29, 2009 and october 17, 2007 world café sets recorded by wxpn. click here and here for a morning becomes eclectic sets recorded on june 15, 2009 and august 01, 2007 by kcrw. don't forget, the album cover image always links to sample songs and the band's image to their website. check here to see if bat for lashes have any gigs scheduled near you. as always, please buy this album from your local independent music store by people who know and love music and not from retailers like wal-mart (soulless, globally-homogenizing, community-killers) or i-tunes (albums should be listened to as an entire composition with album cover and liner notes in hand). incidentally, these two companies sell more music than any other retailer in the united states. that my friend, bites. bat for lashes flows. if you agree, please spread the word (about the band and this site). don't worry if you missed the xx profile from last week: here it is.
